Description
Few things in life stir a hunter’s soul like the bugle of a bull elk. And while I’ve observed and painted them in all sorts of settings, I’ve always been enthralled by bull elk in deep, dark timber. There’s something mysterious and primal about a bull that lives in a more remote and rugged setting than most are willing to hike into. It’s less accessible and, to me, that makes it all the more special.
The concept for this bull started when working with Winchester Ammunition on an image for their packaging. The scene needed to be vertical with a fairly dark background that contrasted with the ivory tips of a large bull elk. So I took the opportunity to create this bull, emerging from his dark, timbered lair to accept the challenge of a rival bull moving in on his cows. He’s the herd bull and, when challenged, is left with only one option: go to war. Hence the title of this one, “Wapiti War Cry.”
