Description
Recently, I was elk hunting in Wyoming with a couple of buddies. We were moving in on a bull through some thick, nasty blowdowns on a north-facing slope when I stumbled—literally—onto this setting. As soon as I saw it, I envisioned a herd bull and his cows busting out of the cover and leaping over one of those giant spruce logs.
When I got back to my studio later that month, I painted “Thundering Herd,” piecing together a variety of reference photos to create the action scene I had pictured in my mind. I had to adjust the placement and angles of the logs from my original reference photo so they framed the elk and helped tell the story rather than becoming the focal point themselves.
We never caught up to that bull and his cows, but I did leave Wyoming with the inspiration for a new original oil painting. That’s one of the things I love about being an artist—not every hunt ends with an elk on the ground, but sometimes the experience gives me something I can bring home and recreate on canvas.
