Few things in the outdoors happen as suddenly as a flushing covey of Bobwhite quail. It doesn’t matter how long the dog has been on point or how many times you’ve stepped forward to flush them in years past, the exact moment it happens always takes you by surprise. Flushing quail can be a challenge to paint, as it rarely happens the same way twice. That’s also a huge opportunity for the artist, as most of it is up to your imagination. I took lots of liberty in this composition, swapping males for females and moving each quail around so they stand out against the background of longleaf pines and giant oaks. It's a scene that most Southern quail hunters can relate to.
