Description
I've been fortunate enough to start my turkey season in Florida for several years now. With a great crew of buddies, a great place to hunt, and one of the earliest seasons in the country, it's a trip I look forward to each year. Oftentimes it's cold and maybe even snowing here in Boone, NC in March, and it's refreshing when the warmth of the Sunshine State hits your face and the sound of gobbling Osceolas hits your ears.
But what I love most is the scenery. Deep, dark, saturated swamps. Sandy dirt roads. Sunlit cow pastures mixed with shady oak hammocks. Spanish moss and palmetto fronds. It's so unique, so vibrant and full of life. The cattle country of Florida provides so much inspiration for an original oil painting.
This spring, I stumbled upon this scene while moving in on a hard gobbling, yet stubborn, Osceola that had roosted over the water and was slowly making his way to the pasture. It was an area where the deep swamp transitions to a field edge. A place where gnarly old cypress trees and stubby, oddly-shaped cypress knees catch the early morning light, providing the perfect spot for these three longbeards to make a grand entrance into the pasture.
Once back in my studio, I set to work reliving the scene and adding this trio into the setting on a 30"x20" canvas.
